Has Your Granite Countertop Sustained Minor Damage?
Tips from a Professional Countertop Service on How to Repair Granite
Granite countertops have a reputation for being extremely durable, however, just like any material, this natural stone does get damaged from time to time and will require a professional granite countertop service for repairs. Cracks and chips are the most likely culprits; however, discoloration is also a problem, in addition to scratches. The first thing to do when doing granite countertop repair is read up the manufacturer’s recommendations, to make sure whoever is performing the repair is not voiding any warranties still in place.
If any bonding agents are needed to repair the damage, the countertop service technician must be sure to color-match the granite, to ensure the bonding agent does not stand out from the rest of the countertop surface. Epoxies are generally used to perform repair which relates to any cracks or chips. When applying these bonding agents, it is crucial that the right tools are used, and any mess is cleaned up immediately.
Epoxies do set extremely fast and will make it almost impossible to clean up any messes once the agent has set. Cleaning up globs as they occur will prevent the need for clean up later. Some granite repairs are not too difficult to do, however, care must be undertaken to ensure any mistakes made are rectified immediately.
For small cracks, it is recommended that a palette knife is used to spread the bonding agent. Also, the agent must be worked deep into the crack; if the crack is too small for this tool, try using a toothpick. The surface of the crack must be smoothed out once the bonding agent is in, this will ensure a smoother look, and not so much sanding later on.
